International Literacy Day

- A day officially designated by UNESCO to raise awareness of the importance of eradicating illiteracy -

It is a memorial day established by UNESCO on November 17, 1965 to raise awareness of the importance of eradicating illiteracy in individuals, communities, and society, and is designated on September 8 every year. On International Literacy Day, UNESCO presents the International Literacy Award to individuals or organizations in developing countries who have contributed to the eradication of illiteracy.

According to the 'International Literacy Survey (2013)' among recent UNESCO data, 774 million adults aged 15 and older still do not have reading and writing skills, and more than two-thirds of them (493 million people) are women.

In the information society, the ability to write and read language determines not only the life of an individual, but also the quality of life of his or her family, country, and even the entire planet.

Despite the importance of literacy education, one in four teenagers around the world are still unable to read a single sentence completely, and vulnerable groups and immigrants in some developed countries, not developing countries, also suffer from lack of literacy skills.

World Educational Cultural AidWECA (WECA)is changing the world through education. The first step is to focus on elementary education so that children can read. However, most children are unable to read and write because they did not attend elementary school properly, so they are unable to enter middle school because they do not know how to read. The jobs that children who do not attend middle school have are the lowest paying jobs that inevitably lead to poverty.

“Education is the only solution to the vicious cycle of poverty.”

World Educational Cultural AidWECA (WECA)We will open a hopeful future through education so that all children can read and write and escape the vicious cycle of poverty.
