A children's science experience class was held for 47 6th grade students at WECA Elementary School in Bagamoyo, Tanzania. This program, sponsored by the Korea Basic Science Institute (KBSI), was a valuable learning opportunity that allowed children to go beyond ‘seeing’ science and to create and experience it themselves.
The children participated in a variety of experiments, such as making a solar fan and a solar car using discarded items (juice packs), and had a special experience implementing the solar cell concept, which they had only encountered in books and blackboards, with their own hands. When the car they made with their own hands actually moved under the sunlight, the children cheered and their eyes sparkled, and their familiarity with and confidence in science greatly increased. In particular, the moment the juice pack they just drank was reborn as the body of a car, the scene was filled with even more warmth as the children exclaimed, “I want to make it again!” as they felt the joy of connecting science with everyday life. The teachers also said, “It was an amazing class that cannot be easily experienced in Tanzania,” and expressed their sincere hope that the class would continue every year.
Chairman Bang Jeong-hwan expressed his gratitude, saying, “Science is another language for children to explore the world. Sponsors’ interest is instilling in children the confidence that ‘they can do it.’”
The World Educational Cultural Aid will continue to support science and culture education programs to help Tanzanian children develop their creativity and curiosity.
