[Overseas] Laos Sawannakhet WECA Elim School News

Overseas 2026. 03. 17 09:00

Korean language classes were held at Elim School in Sawannakhet, Laos. On this day, many students participated and filled the classroom, including 26 3rd graders, 24 4th graders, and 21 5th graders. There were fewer absentees than usual, so we could feel the students' high level of interest and participation.

This class focused on practicing reading and writing ‘ga, na, da’, which are the basics of Korean. Even though classes have been going on for over a year, some students still have difficulty reading basic letters, so we took time to re-establish the basics, taking into account each grade level. We were also able to see that the percentage of students who learned Hangul increased as the grade went up. In particular, among 5th grade students, the number of students who can read and write ‘A, B, C’ naturally has increased noticeably.

3rd and 4th grade students learned the pronunciation and use of words such as ‘ja, cha’, ‘ba, sa’ and reviewed previously learned words. Thanks to repeated learning, students were able to read along with relative ease and showed confidence. In the 5th grade class, we learned Korean expressions under the theme of ‘Conversation at the Hospital.’ By practicing answering questions such as “Where does it hurt?” using body parts, such as “My head hurts” or “My leg hurts,” I learned expressions that can be used in real life. At the end, an activity was conducted in which participants formed pairs and had a conversation, with one person taking on the role of a doctor and the other a patient.

The teacher who conducted the class said that the class took place in a stable atmosphere with students actively participating. Students are developing their interest in Korean through activities such as learning new expressions and speaking them themselves.

Chairman Bang Jeong-hwan said, "Language education is an important channel for understanding different cultures and sharing minds. I hope that students will develop their dreams toward a wider world through Korean language classes."

The World Educational Cultural Aid will continue to provide educational support to Lao students so that they can continue to learn the language and develop confidence.
