seoul--(Newswire) October 24, 2019 -- The World Educational Cultural Aid, an international relief NGO, and KB Kookmin Card (CEO Lee Dong-cheol) and the KB Kookmin Card branch of the Korea Office and Financial Services Workers' Union (Branch Manager Lee Gyeong-jin) conducted 'joint labor-management overseas volunteer activities' for five days from October 21 in the Shevida area on the outskirts of Yangon, Myanmar, to improve the local education environment, including repairing school facilities and improving educational equipment.

This volunteer activity, which was carried out as ‘the first Harmony ‘Happiness Class’ drawn by KB Kookmin Card’s labor and management together,’ was organized into a volunteer group of about 20 people through a contest among KB Kookmin Card’s internal employees.

Event participants supported the expansion of a multi-purpose classroom to serve as a class space and local library at ‘NO 17 Basic Education Post Primary School Shwepyitha’ and carried out renovation and repair activities for outdated facilities, such as painting the inside and outside of the school building.

We also carried out work to improve the poor educational environment, including repairing educational equipment such as desks, chairs, and computers that were broken or outdated and unusable, and repairing lighting and firefighting facilities.

Participants participated as instructors in the one-day craft experience program and had the opportunity to make eco-bags, coloring pencil cases, bead bracelets, and custom stickers for local students and parents.

Lee Gyeong-jin, head of the KB Kookmin Card branch of the Korea Office and Financial Services Workers' Union, said, "This volunteer activity is a meaningful project in which the labor union and the company put into practice the spirit of 'UBUNTU', which means 'you are there, I am' in African language." He added, "We will continue to sincerely practice the spirit of 'Ubuntu' through various joint social contribution activities between labor and management at home and abroad."

KB Kookmin Card said that it hopes that children and youth from underprivileged classes who have been taught in poor environments will be able to further their dreams for the future in improved schools through this joint labor-management volunteer activity. Following Myanmar, the company plans to continue joint labor-management volunteer activities for children and teenagers in educationally underprivileged areas at home and abroad who desperately need attention and help.

WECA, the World Educational Cultural Aid, plans to provide continuous and systematic educational opportunities to underprivileged children in Korea and children in poor countries around the world who cannot receive basic education, and to expand educational and cultural support projects to improve the educational and cultural environment.

Bang Jeong-hwan, executive director of the World Educational Cultural Aid, said, “It is truly rewarding to see everyone come together with bright smiles even in hot weather, and we will continue to actively carry out programs and cultural exchange activities in conjunction with companies and university organizations so that we can share pain with more people and convey love and hope by going into poverty.”
